WeAreX is not just a dating app, but a social space for open-minded people to connect and explore without judgment or shame. Born out of the global adult events brand 'Killing Kittens', this app was designed to help people find like-minded individuals in a world where social taboos and censorship often prevent open discussions about sex and sexuality. Despite these obstacles, WeAreX has already attracted a significant user base, with hundreds of thousands of downloads and £2.5m in funding raised to date.

As the UI/UX designer, brand strategist, and fundraising expert for the project, I've played a pivotal role in creating a profitable company and a global movement. In this case study, I'll take you through the different aspects of the app's development, from branding to user experience, and show you how we overcame challenges to create a unique and innovative social platform.

Creating a social dating app is a huge challenge. It's not just about swiping right or left, it's about creating a space where people can find their tribe, without judgment.

Throughout the entire design process, safety, privacy, and security were always at the forefront.

We wanted users to feel reassured and safe, which was pivotal in providing a quality and unique user experience that allowed them to let go of inhibitions and express themselves freely. Below, you'll see the core parts of the design that make up the app and what makes it unique.

WeAreX is built upon a few key pillars, the first being member profiles. We created profiles that allow users to express their sexuality in a safe and open environment.

Our design was tailored to the needs of sex-positive individuals, providing fun and provocative prompts that help users express their true desires in a way that feels comfortable and engaging.

We made finding your perfect match on WeAreX easy by creating a browse members section with special search filters that allow users to find people who share the same kinks, fantasies, gender, or sexuality.

We also added unique features like "Meet tonight" for spontaneous meetups.

One of the unique features of WeAreX is its event platform. We built a ticketing platform into the app, enabling users to browse and buy tickets for sex-positive events, as well as check-in using their e-ticket and QR code.

WeAreX allows hosting of events that might not be permitted on traditional ticketing platforms.

To foster a sense of community and help people find like-minded individuals, WeAreX offers chat groups as another pillar of the app.

Designing for large-scale chat groups and a sex-positive community required innovative thinking to ensure safety, security, and privacy were at the forefront of the user experience.

When tasked with creating a new launch video for WeAreX, I had just two days to storyboard, produce, and edit it from scratch. The goal was to create a compelling and sexy launch trailer that would both explain the problem WeAreX was solving and showcase the app as the solution.

It needed to be approachable and feel like a call to action. Despite the challenges, the trailer was a huge success, receiving rave reviews from the team, stakeholders, shareholders, and audiences alike. It was definitely a proud moment for me and my team.

Crafting a brand for a dating app that stands out from the competition is no easy feat. Our goal was to create a gender-neutral and vibrant brand that embodies the energy and spirit of our community. We wanted to convey a sense of freshness, boldness, and unapologetic authenticity that was reflected in both our visual identity and tone of voice.

One of the challenges we faced was creating a recognisable X logo that wasn't mistaken for a decorative element or a close button. After experimenting with different designs, we decided to place the X inside a heart, giving it warm and positive connotations that are subtle yet satisfying to spot. Our logo is clean, rounded, and colourful, conveying approachability, friendliness, and diversity.

Since 2018, we've secured £2.5m in 4 rounds of seed funding, with me as a driving force behind each raise. I carefully curated each investment pitch deck to showcase WeAreX's unique value proposition in a competitive dating app market. Despite the challenge of convincing investors to support a social dating app focused on enhancing people's sex lives, our pitch decks have received an average of over 1000 views each and have been overfunded every time.
